Chelsea are poised to increase interest in Gambia striker Adama Bujang after his strong start at the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina.

The 18-year-old scored within 30 seconds of his country’s opening group stage match with Honduras on Monday, then followed it up with a crucial second goal in a 2-1 win.

The 6ft 3in forward lived up to his nickname “The Gambian Hurricane” with a whirlwind display full of energy that impressed watching club scouts.

Bujang was already on Chelsea’s radar after his performances at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations where he was named in the Team of the Tournament after scoring four goals.

He has been very prolific with his club Steve Biko FC but will struggle to get a work permit in this country. If Chelsea continues to move, they plan to loan him out immediately.

Chelsea have been exploring the possibility of investing in satellite clubs in Portugal and France to help their ever-growing list of players as they continue to snap up young talent from around the world.

Other teams in the English Premier League such as Crystal Palace, Brighton and Tottenham are also following the exploits of Bujang, but it is understood that the main competition is from Sporting Lisbon, Inter Milan and Red Bull Salzburg.

Gambia from Bujang take on France on Thursday who will be keen to get the tournament back on track after losing to South Korea in their opening match.
