Denver Church Steps Up to Help Newly Arrived Immigrant Families

DENVER – A church in Denver is doing everything it can to help as the city of Denver continues to struggle to meet the needs of the hundreds of immigrants who pray each day.

Guillermo Puppo, pastor of Cuidad de Dios Church, told Denver 7 Sunday that giving families a place to feel part of a community is one of the most important ways his church can help.

“We help them emotionally and spiritually in their faith, to receive the strength to keep pushing,” said Pastor Guillermo.

He said their church family is constantly growing as more immigrants come to Denver. Some of them became permanent members of the congregation.

“Sometimes you need emotional and spiritual support and support, not only for yourself but also for your children,” he said. There are more immigrants coming in, and we’re helping them try to find a place to live. We are trying to help him find jobs.”

A recently arrived Venezuelan family – Liliana Guzmán, Juan José and their children – said the church meant a lot to them.

The family of four had only been in Denver for a few weeks, but she said she had already met several new families and had help finding jobs.

Pastor Guillermo said that while every family’s journey to Denver is different, their doors are always open to help anyone who needs it.

“We invite them. We encourage them to come to seek God, God’s help, God’s strength, God’s resources,” said Pastor Guillermo.

He said the church accepts financial donations to help families if the community wants to donate.

“We’ll use it for clothes or sometimes for gas money or hotel nights for a family… whatever they need,” he said.

With a sharp increase in immigrant arrivals, Denver city officials said shelters are nearing capacity limits and the city is calling on community partners to help with shelters, donations, and other public support.
