Former New Mexico and Texas college football player Jaden Hellaby dies at 21

Former New Mexico and Texas football player Jaden Hellaby has passed away at the age of 21, the two schools announced Monday.

No word on the cause of death. Hellabi played two games as a linebacker for Texas in 2020 and retired in 2021 before transferring to New Mexico.

Earlier on Monday, Jaden’s younger brother, Lando Hellabi, posted a tweet indicating that Jaden is no longer alive.

Halby has been missing since Friday, and a relative said Sunday on social media that the family could not “track any of his devices.”

He was reportedly last seen in his hometown of Dallas.

“Forever living by the big broda,” Texas Tech defensive back Landon Hellaby posted on Twitter. “I love you so much and have you and your family forever, I swear you shall have the king’s rest.”

“It is with extremely tragic and devastating news to hear of Jaden’s passing,” Texas coach Steve Sarkissian said in a statement.

He was an amazing guy and someone we all really enjoyed being around, training and spending time with.

“All of our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues, and we want to send our deepest condolences to them at such a difficult time.”

Hellabi played running back and cornerback for New Mexico last season and caught 13 passes for 59 yards and caught two passes for 44 yards in eight games. He entered the transfer window after the season.

“The Lobo family is saddened to learn of the passing of RB/TE Jaden Hellaby,” New Mexico said on Twitter.

In immediate shock now. One of the best young men I have had the honor of teaching and training.

Great student, athlete, and even better human being who demonstrated exemplary leadership. Rest in peace, Jaden condolences to the entire Halabi family.
