“The Netflix account is intended for single-family use,” the company said in a statement.
San Francisco:
Netflix on Tuesday expanded its crackdown on users who share passwords with people outside their immediate family as it seeks to boost revenue for the leading TV streaming service.
“The Netflix account is intended for single-family use,” the company said in a statement.
Netflix said early this year that more than 100 million households share accounts with the service, “impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and movies.”
Netflix has experimented with “borrower” or “joint” accounts, where subscribers can add additional users at a higher price or move viewing profiles to separate accounts, in a few markets. On Tuesday, it announced it would expand the policy to more than 100 countries.
As growth at Netflix slowed last year, the Silicon Valley-based streaming company set out to get people to watch for free with shared passwords to start paying for the service without alienating subscribers.
“This account sharing initiative helps us generate a larger base of potential paying members and grow Netflix for the long term,” Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on an earnings call.
The broadcast TV giant recently told financial analysts that it delayed a large-scale crackdown on account password sharing to “improve the member experience.”
Netflix said it made sure subscribers had seamless access to the service away from home or on different devices such as tablets, TVs or smartphones.
Netflix said in April that it had 232.5 million subscribers in the first quarter of the year and that its level of emerging advertising is going well.
The company said in a recent presentation to advertisers that it has more than 5 million subscribers in its ad support category.
For the first time ever, American adults will spend more time this year watching digital video on platforms like Netflix, TikTok and YouTube than watching traditional TV, Insider Intelligence predicted.
Market tracker expects “linear TV” to account for less than half of daily viewership for the first time ever.
