Marketa Vondrousova made history at Wimbledon on Saturday. The 24-year-old Czech player beat Anas Jabeur 6-4 6-4 to become the first unseeded woman to win the prestigious tournament. Known for having numerous tattoos down each arm, Vondrousova not only won Wimbledon, but also won a tattoo bet with her coach.
Marketa Vondrousova is coming off an upset to win her first Grand Slam title
Marketa Vondrousova entered Saturday’s final as the underdog. Jabeur entered as a favorite at -220, according to CBS Sports, and was looking to avenge last year’s loss to 17th seed Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon final.
Vondrousova trailed El Assaleh to Jabeur, the 28-year-old Tunisian star, in every set before rallying to victory. The win was the first Grand Slam tournament title of her career.
Vondrousova reached the tournament round after defeating Elina Svitolina on Thursday, with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. On her way to the final, Jabeur got revenge on Rybakina in the quarter-finals this year, winning 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Vondrousova also won a tattoo bet with her coach
He’s made a lot of tattoos that glide across Vondrousova’s arms. According to the Daily Mail, the tennis star got her first tattoo when she was just 16 years old. She said that each of them has a special meaning. Above her right elbow, she has one that says, “No rain, no flowers.”
Back in 2021, I explained the meaning to reporters, at the Daily Mail.
“I think, you know, without failure, there is no success, so you have to go through some tough games,” she said then. “Even if you lose, especially. If you believe in yourself, that’s the reward.”
After winning the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, the five Olympic rings were inked on her body. So what happens now that you’ve won Wimbledon?
“I have a bet with my coach,” she said, after beating Svitolina on Thursday to reach the final. “If I win a Grand Slam, he gets one, so I hope I do.”
