The show is produced by Angela C. Santomero, Todd Kessler, and Traci Paige Johnson. The show had influences from shows like Mister Rogers neighborhood And open Sesamewith the intent of educating its young audience rather than simply entertaining it. Part of it was just pausing, allowing audience participation and pointing out where the clues are for Steve (or Joe or Josh). Johnson commented on the effectiveness of the show’s direction and how what seemed superfluous to adult viewers meant everything to children.
“It’s funny how if you wait half a pause longer you usually get your answer… and how important that is. If[parents]don’t watch them with the kid, they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s too slow.’” But when they watch it with a kid, “Oh.” I see, I see.
